Science while…

Malinformation is based on fact, but used out of context to mislead, harm, or manipulate.

In the war on science and language currently underway in the United States, it appears we need to revisit some concepts that can serve us in the defense of innovation and progress.

Concept one is literacy.

I’m in disbelief of the content on whitehouse.gov. Yes, Biden spent millions on transgender animal experiments is a perfect example of malinformation taking advantage of the literacy crisis in the states.

Generally, scientists explore the role of “X” in/on “Y”. X is a variable or group of variables that affect the outcome Y.

If X is exercise and Y is weight loss → We are exploring the role of exercise in weight loss.

This gives us context on the relationship between these two entities. To merely state we are studying weight loss is malinformation.

To state the Biden administration spent millions on transgender mice experiments is misinformative because it takes X out of context with Y.

In the below studies cited by the Trump administration, X is hormone therapy.

  • $455,000: “A Mouse Model to Test the Effects of Gender-affirming Hormone Therapy on HIV Vaccine-induced Immune Responses”

Y is Immune responses in the context of HIV vaccine administration.

  • $2,500,000: “Reproductive Consequences of Steroid Hormone Administration”
    • “These mice manifest defects in ovarian architecture and have altered folliculogenesis.”

Y is reproductive changes such as the structure of ovaries and creation of follicles.

  • $299,940: “Gender-Affirming Testosterone Therapy on Breast Cancer Risk and Treatment Outcomes”
    • “We will compare the incidences and tumor specific survival in female mice (intact) and oophorectomized female mice receiving TT with their respective counterparts that do not receive TT.”

Y is risk of breast cancer and breast cancer treatment.

  • $735,113: “Microbiome mediated effects of gender affirming hormone therapy in mice”

Y is the gut microbiome.

  • $1,200,000: “Androgen effects on the reproductive neuroendocrine axis”
    • “Aim 2 utilizes transgenic mice to test whether male-level androgens acting via AR specifically in kisspeptin neurons are necessary and/or sufficient for androgen inhibition of in vivo LH pulse parameters, including pulse frequency, and the estrogen-induced LH surge.”

Y is neuroendocrine function.

  • $3,100,000: “Gonadal hormones as mediators of sex and gender influences in asthma”
    • “We will study the contributions of estrogens to HDM-induced asthma outcomes using male and female gonadectomized mice treated with estradiol…”

Y is asthma.

Thus the corrected title of this article would be:

Yes, Biden spent millions on exploring the role of hormone therapy on immune response, reproductive changes, breast cancer risk and treatment, the gut microbiome, neuroendocrine function and asthma outcomes.

Now go tell a friend (or a foe).

Until next time,

Stef
